Holiday Troop Meeting on December 20

Thursday December 20, 2012 beginning at 6:30 PM is our annual holiday and final troop meeting of the year. For the holiday party scouts should plan to bring $15 gifts for the holiday exchange game and each patrol was assigned items to bring for dinner. The troop will be providing pizza. Parents should check with their scouts for information on what to bring (drinks, deserts or paper items).

This week we also learned that the troop has been invited to attend the West Point Camporee in April. Signups will be done at the holiday troop meeting and will be on a first come basis. We currently have 40 slots for youth and adults available to the troop.

The registration cost for the camporee is $25.00 per person. This cost is non-refundable and may be paid by scout account or check at the time you signup. The cost for food is separate and will be determined once the final count and menu has been determined.

Peace Light

Mr. Tom Curley will have the Peace Light at the troop meeting on Thursday December 13, 2012 to share. If you would like to bring it home please bring a candle or some other means to transport it.

For over a thousand years lamps have been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem Israel.  For the last 22 years, a child from Upper Austria has lit two blast proof miner’s lamps from a grotto lamp. The blast proof miners lamps are then carried on an Austrian Airlines jet from Tel Aviv Israel to Vienna Austria from where the Peace Light is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations from across Europe who take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own countries.

Since 2004, Austrian Airlines has flown the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light from Vienna to New York City. Scout Leaders light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the United States and Canada to share the Peace Light.

This is your opportunity to take the Peace Light home with you. Bring an oil lamp or enclosed candle to the Meeting and we will share the Peace Light with you.
