Middle School Technology Design Challenge Permission Form Available 

The Middle School Technology Design Challenge or MSTDC is a springtime robotics event based on the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics platforms. It is intended to be a low key, fun filled event for Middle School aged students. Most participating teams are from Middle Schools in Hunterdon, Mercer and Somerset Counties. Other organizations/groups are welcome to participate, such as 4-H, Boys and Girls Scouts, etc.

This year’s challenges:

  • Choose wisely… and quickly
  • Four Square 400
  • Rapid Fire Shooting
  • Rube Goldberg Free Form

Scouts attending this event should coordinate with Mrs. Bernick for travel arrangements and have this Permission Form completed by a parent or guardian.

Overnight Camping and Canoeing Trip Signup Available 

Overnight Camping at Valley View in the Delaware Water Gap National Park and Canoeing on the Delaware River on Friday May 18th and Saturday May 19th. Scouts interested in attending this trip should Signup online and check the website News Page for updated information.

This trip is available to all scouts however priority will be given to scouts that need to complete prerequisite work for the Camping Merit Badge.

Scouts should plan to meet at the Bethlehem Township Community Center on Friday May 18th at 5:30 PM and expect to return on Saturday May 19th between 5:00 and 6:00 PM. Note that weather and/or river conditions may cause this trip to be rescheduled for Saturday May 19th through Sunday May 20th. Notice will be provided on the News Page and via email.

Scouts must have completed a swim test and should plan to attend upcoming training trips to prepare for this event. Announcements for this training will be made online and at the weekly troop meeting.

Visit to Paul Robinson Observatory Voorhees State Park 

We have 12 scouts and 6 adults confirmed to go this Friday. There is room for more if signups are confirmed by the Thursday Troop Meeting. The cost is $6 per scout as the Troop is picking up $6 per scot – again this troop subsidy is funded by our fund raising including the fertilizer sale.

We will meet in the Municipal building parking lot at 6:30 in order to arrange drivers and leave by 6:45 so we can be in the observatory parking lot by 7:15 PM (approximately 13 mi = 26 minute ride). Any parent who planned to drop their scout off at the observatory please confirm to with Mr. Garvey that is their plan so we will not be waiting at the municipal building.

Note this visit will start the scouts on the Astronomy Merit Badge requirements.

Summer Camp Scheduling information 

Scouts attending 2012 Summer Camp and their Parents,

Mrs. Zalewski will be at the 3/15 Scout meeting to review pointers for signing up for your summer camp schedules during the scout meeting.  For the scouts attending camp for the first time, she will hold a separate session for you and your parents, no need to attend this session.  If you would like to look up the first year scout program at the camp website, go to http://www.ockanickon.org and select the link on the home page for the 2012 summer camp program information, then select the link for the Dan Beard program.  This is the 1st year scout program you will take part of while at summer camp. 

Mrs. Zalewski will review how to set up a schedule, look up the merit badges to take, look up the pre-reqs, merit badges you can take (some require you to be at a certain rank) and any other questions about the badges themselves and even summer camp.  The goal is to make sure that each scout starting with their 2nd year of camp is taking 2-3 Eagle Badges until they can take no more.  Following this plan will allow them to attain their ranks without having to wait on their Eagle merit badges.  After scouts have selected their Eagle badges, it’s up to them on how they want to fill up the rest of their day at camp with badges.

Please mark your calendar if your scout is attending camp for the 2nd year and any others that are interested in learning how to help their scout fill out their schedules.  I have emails to the camp as they have changed how they are supporting the Eagle badges and Shooting Sports badges and I need to make sure I have a grasp on it prior to helping the scouts with their schedules.  For those that would like to check out what Ockanickon has posted already for the schedules, please to go their website: http://www.ockanickon.org and follow the links I have listed above.

Will also have the file of what badges the scouts have already attained and for those that are nearing the end of their Eagle Badges, will send an individual email to you and your parents on what you have left to take.

Just to let those of you who are new to the troop or are 2nd year campers know, Mrs. Zalewski has been helping the scouts with their schedules and organizing them for 6 or 7 years now (losing track).  She has the final say on what they can or cannot take.  Once we settle on a schedule, the scouts fill out their merit badge cards. Mrs. Zalewski will look at all the merit badge cards that are filled out to make sure they match up with the schedule I’m provided and if there are problems she will contact you. 

Pre-reqs will be handled just like last year.  Mrs. Zalewski will update the downloadable excel file that is on our troop website with the pre-reqs and it is up to the scout and their parents to make sure that all pre-reqs are completed prior to summer camp.  There might be a few checkpoints by some of the adults in the troop to make sure scouts are on the right track.  This is especially true for the scouts taking the Personal Fitness, Personal Management and Communications MBs, as there are a lot of pre-reqs for those badges.

Troop Meeting Reminders for March 1 

Reminders and updates since the last troop meeting:

  1. Thursday March 1st is the next scheduled weekly troop meeting and we’ll welcome several new scouts to the troop that recently crossed over from Cub Pack 119 in Union Township.
  2. We have several event and activity signups that are being handled online through the troop website:
    • The first is regarding the annual fertilizer fundraiser sale, for new parents see the troop website News page for some additional information. The troop sells in the area on weekends in March within our local community and this weekend is the first weekend selling. All shifts are available and adults will be needed. Look for more information from Steve Schwab via email and at the troop meeting. I’ll also get that information posted to the site.
    • Second up is the trip to the Paul Robinson Observatory at Voorhees State Park on Friday March 23rd. We don’t yet have a confirmed time but it will be in the evening
    • Next is the Whitewater Rafting trip at Jim Thorpe PA on Sunday April 29th. That date has now been finalized.
    • And finally a reminder on the Middle School Technology Design Challenge (MSTDC) for middle school age scouts interested in technology and the Robotics Merit Badge. The challenge is on April 21st so watch for information from Mrs. Amy Bernick.
  3. Summer Camp is the week of July 15th this year. Signups are online however for this one you must also print a signup form and submit to Mr. Tufaro at the weekly troop meeting with payment. Costs for summer camp can be paid by scout account and/or check made payable to Troop 191.

Robinson Observatory Trip Signup Available 

The troop will host a trip to The Paul H. Robinson Observatory in Voorhees State Park on Friday March 23rd.

Scouts interested in this event can signup online. Adults will also be needed for this trip.

Middle School Technology Design Challenge Signup Available 

Mrs. Amy Bernick has offered to work with scouts interested in competing in the Middle School Technology Design Challenge on April 21, 2012. The event will be held at Bridgewater Raritan Middle School.

The main goal is to encourage the students to strategize the best way to creatively solve a problem. In this case, the problem is to score as many points when attempting these challenges. Some parts of these tasks are quite difficult, so compromises may need to happen. Like any challenge, the students should develop a plan (or plans) with timeline or steps. Part of the plan could be to create a team and divide up the work.

Mrs. Bernick is looking for a few more scouts to compete at this event and offers an excellent opportunity for those working on the Robotics Merit Badge or those scouts interested in beginning the Robotics Merit Badge.

Scouts that wish to participate can Signup Online. Adults will also be needed for transportation and required two-deep leadership.

Robotics Merit Badge on Thursday September 15 

Mrs. Amy Bernick will begin the Robotics Merit Badge during the troop meeting on Thursday September 15, 2011. The scouts working on this merit badge will create a challenge course for their bots on Saturday October 15. Online signup is now available.

Troop Meeting Reminders for June 23 

  • Meeting for all scouts and parents of scouts attending summer camp this year at OSR. All camp contracts should be reviewed with parents and scouts, signed by parents and turned in to Mr. Tufaro.
  • Climbing Merit Badge begins with Mr. Barry Rusnock.
  • Families that wish to order summer camp photos or meal tickets for additional family members visiting on Sunday should visit the troop website signup page and place order.
